Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS or drones) are now a common mapping and 3D modeling tool in many organizations. To fully-leverage this technology’s incredible capability to save money and time, operators need to have a fundamental understanding of how to collect quality images and process those images into usable information.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During this three-day introductory course, attendees will learn proper camera settings and mission planning, participate in hands-on flight operations, and spend time working with leading structure from motion (SfM) software to process and analyze images collected from drones.
Specific use-cases explored in this course are precision mapping, vegetation analysis, and 3D modeling. Standard visual, multispectral, and thermal cameras will be used throughout this course to give the student a well-rounded understanding of the capabilities of passive sensors equipped on a sUAS.
At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Understand imaging sensors, camera settings, the electromagnetic spectrum, and camera modifications
- Understand mission planning for precision mapping, vegetation analysis, and 3D modeling
- Understand implementing ground control points and other means of spatial control
- Process data related to precision mapping, vegetation analysis, and 3D modeling
- Recognize the advantages of Agisoft Metashape (Photoscan), Pix4DMapper, and ArcGIS

Location: Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus in Salina, Kansas
Cost: $750. Course fee includes course instruction, course materials and notes, hands on image capturing mission with KSU aircraft, access to data and image processing software, 64 GB 3.0 USB to save data sets developed during course, and daily refreshments.
